Caroline M. Apovian, M.D., FACP, FACN. Director

Dr. Apovian is currently the Director, Nutrition and Weight Management Center and Co-director of Nutrition and Metabolic Support Service at Boston University Medical Center. She also serves as Director of Clinical Research at the Obesity Research Center of Boston University Medical Center, and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Apovian is also a principal investigator for the Centers for Obesity Research and Education (C.O.R.E.) in New England. As co-Director of a BONRC Core (Human Metabolic & Genetic Core), she also serves on the Executive Committee.

Dr. Apovian was recently awarded the Physician Nutrition Specialist Award given by the American Society of Clinical Nutrition to advance nutrition education to doctors and medical students.

She served as Medical Director of the Program for Weight Management, Division of Metabolic Support Service, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School from 1998 to 2000, and was the Director of Weight Management and Nutritional Medicine at Spence Centers for Women’s Health from 1996 to 2000. Prior to moving to Boston, she was the Director of the High Risk Obesity Clinic and the Director of Nutrition Support Fellowship at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Apovian has published widely in the form of original papers, abstracts, reviews and book chapters on nutrition, obesity, and nutrition support in hospitalized patients.

Dr. Apovian serves as nutrition consultant to NASA at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. She has been selected to participate in clinical status evaluation workshops to develop the nutrition program for astronauts on future long- term space missions.

George T. Chiampas, DO

Dr. George T. Chiampas is a Clinical Instructor and Attending Physician in Emergency Medicine at Northwestern University and the Feinberg School of Medicine, as well as consulting physician for the U.S. Soccer national Team and medical director for several athletic events in the Chicago area. In addition, Dr. Chiampas is the Medical Director, Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

After receiving his Bachelors of Science degree from Chicago’s Loyola University, Dr. Chiampas completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Cook County Hospital where he was named Trauma Resident of the Class of 2003. He went on to serve as Attending Physician of Emergency Medicine at Rush University Medical Center and completed his Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Resurrection Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Chiampas completed his internship at Illinois Masonic Medical Center and received his Doctorate of Osteopathy from Midwestern University. Since completing his training, Dr. Chiampas has been an active instructor of Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine to medical students, residents and Sports Medicine Fellows. He has served as team physician for Loyola Academy and North Park University and has traveled internationally with the U.S. Soccer Team. Dr. Chiampas served as a consulting physician for the Chicago Marathon from 2000 to 2006, and was named Medical Director of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and Shamrock Shuffle 8K in 2007.

Larry Doud

Mr. Doud is serves as Chief Executive Officer, Treasurer, Secretary and Director of Rochester Drug Cooperative, Inc, the 10th largest pharmaceutical wholesaler in the US with annual sales in excess of $600 million. Larry is also a member of the Healthcare Distribution Management Association Board of Directors, the Board of Managers of the Wholesale Alliance LLC and a founding member of the NCPA Industry Advisory Council.

Throughout his career Larry has been one of the most influential and deeply committed executives to Independent Pharmacy in the marketplace. Prior to joining RDC Larry spent twenty-two years in sales positions including Vice President of Sales with two national wholesalers – McKesson and Cardinal Drug. Larry joined RDC in 1987 and immediately went about the work of building the company’s volume and reputation to what it is today. It can easily be said of Larry that few others have fought and served Independent Pharmacy as passionately as he has throughout his career. Today Larry oversees RDC’s entire operation and reports directly to and is a member of the Board of Directors. Being widely known throughout the industry he also serves in various organizations such as Pharmacy First, OptiSource, and NCPA.

(Retired) General William “Gus” Pagonis

(Retired) General William Gus Pagonis was the Director of Logistics during the Gulf War of 1991 and is widely recognized for his logistical achievements particularly during Desert Storm. After successfully masterminding logistics for the Gulf War and winning high praise from General Norman Schwarzkopf, Pagonis left the Army in 1993 and was elected Executive Vice President of Logistics for Sears Roebuck & Co. General Pagonis gained attention as General Norman Schwarzkopf’s logistics commander during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He was responsible for all logistics—food, shelter, fuel, ammunition, transportation and contracting during the Gulf War. His experiences resulted in the book Moving Mountains: Lessons in Leadership and Logistics from the Gulf War, published by the Harvard Business School Press.

During his military career, he headed logistics in tours of Vietnam, Panama, and Germany, as well as during the Persian Gulf. He also served two tours in the Pentagon, one as a legislative liaison officer responsible for coordination with Congress, the other in charge of transportation, energy, and troop support for the Army. Among his awards and decorations are the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star with “V,” and three Air Medals.

General Pagonis, a native of Charleroi, Pennsylvania, completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Pennsylvania State University, from which he earned his M.B.A. in operations and research analysis.

Robert Stagliano

Mr. Stagliano serves as the Vice President / Engineering Manager of RC Systems, Inc., an Electrical Engineering firm that specializes in the Automation of production lines. RC Systems has completed automation design, implementation and placement for companies and numerous industries ranging from Kraft Foods, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson Biotech, DelMonte and Pinnacle Foods among others. Bob is a graduate of Villanova University, BS, Electrical Engineering. Prior to founding RC Systems in 1993, Bob had worked with General Electric as an Application Engineer and Control Engineer. He is a member of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) since 1993.

Gregory L. Primus, M.D.

Fellowship Trained Sports Medicine Surgeon
Former NFL Wider Receiver (Denver Broncos & Chicago Bears)

Dr. Primus is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and founder of The Chicago Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery, member of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons and American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, and currently serves as team physician at the professional, university and high school level. Dr. Primus is uniquely qualified for sports medicine because of his unlikely alignment of medical training and prior athletic experience. Unlike most physicians in sports medicine, Dr. Primus is a former NFL player; his medical career follows a remarkable career as a Wide Receiver in the N.F.L. as a wide receiver for Denver and Chicago. In addition to his sports medicine training, which focuses on arthroscopic surgery and reconstruction of all the major joints, Dr. Primus also specializes in arthritis reconstruction of the knee and shoulder, with a focus on ligament sparing joint arthroplasty.
